With the Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha giving nod to the `The Jammu and Kashmir Universities Bill, 2026′, it is expected that renowned institutions operating elsewhere in the country will open their branches even in Jammu.

Chandigarh University and Love Professional University that are based in Punjab are already making strides in different parts of the country by opening their branches. The Chandigarh university campus in Unnao of UP has already started operations.

The Bill for setting up of private universities in J&K was cleared by the Legislative Assembly on April 4 and was sent to the LG for his approval. Reports stated that the rules will now be framed for setting up of private universities in the Union Territory after which these will be floated in the public domain.

Some private universities have already approached the J&K government for setting up their campuses. However, those intending to set up their university in J&K will have to shell out an amount of a non-refundable fee not exceeding Rs 25 lakh along with a DPR of the project.

Thousands of students from J&K take admission in Chandigarh University in Mohali and Lovely Professional University in Phagwara every year due to absence of many professional courses in J&K. Besides all the students completing graduation cannot be accommodated in university of Jammu and Kashmir.

The decision is likely to not only open the door for new opportunities for the students but will also lift the economy of the region. It has been learnt that the private universities who approached the government wanted to set up their campuses in Jammu.

Jammu is witnessing an education boom as the region has IIM, IIT, IIMC, Central University along with AIIMS.

The Comptroller and Auditor General report has raised serious concerns over the Placement Cell of the University of Jammu as it has not been able to facilitate employment for majority of students studying in the varsity.

As per NAAC Manual, student placement is one of the yardsticks for ranking an HEI.

According to ’Quality Mandate for Higher Education Institutions in India’ issued by UGC, an HEI should fulfill expectations of industry and prepare employable and skilled graduates.

For facilitating placements and summer internship for the students, a Placement Cell

(PC) headed by Dean Student Placements was in place in the Jammu University since 2009. As per the CAG report, records showed that the cell had not followed any process/ calendar for placement activities.

“Audit further observed that none of the students enrolled in general courses offered by the University had secured placements and the placement activity was restricted to a few select departments. Out of over 1,000 students enrolled in professional departments such as MBA (International Business), MBA (Hospitality and Tourism) and MCA programme, only 224 had got placed during 2017-22” the CAG report stated.

The CAG report further stated “Dean Student’s Placement stated (February 2023) that placement being an industry driven process, it was difficult to develop a structured calendar for placement activities and that majority of corporate placements was in respect of professional departments.

Registrar, added in November 2023) that students enrolled in general courses usually opt for higher studies or prefer the Government sector as such placements in such courses is always less.

In a major setback to the University of Jammu (JU), the Bachelor of Physical Education (B P Ed) and Master of Physical Education (M P Ed) courses at its Directorate of Sports and Physical Education have been refused recognition by the Regulatory body National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

It is after the Letter of Permission of the Vaishno Devi medical college in Katra was cancelled by the National Medical Commission that another jolt has come to the education sector of Jammu division.

As per a report in Daily Excelsior, the decision to refuse the recognition was taken by the Northern Regional Committee of NCTE during its 454th meeting (Volume-I), held recently.

Surprisingly, the NCTE has granted recognition to the same courses of the University of Kashmir from the academic session 2026-27, putting the authorities of the Jammu University in an embarrassing situation.

As per the report, the Northern Regional Committee of the NCTE refused the recognition to the JU for the said courses after examining the online file of the institution along with related documents under the provisions of the NCTE Act, 1993, NCTE Rules, 1997 and NCTE Regulations, 2014.

The NRC observed that the Jammu University has been offering B P Ed and M P Ed programmes on self-finance mode, but was not paying the required processing fee to NCTE

The report suggested that the Jammu University informed the committee that no processing fee had been paid as both programmes were initiated in 2004 and 2007 respectively, during a period when the JU was outside the purview of NCTE due to the special constitutional position of Jammu and Kashmir prior to 2019.

However, the Committee did not accept the plea and also pointed out deficiencies in faculty appointments.

Sources pointed out that a senior faculty member from non-physical education background was at the helm of affairs at the Directorate of Sports and Physical Education.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday chaired the 84th Meeting of the University Council of the University of Kashmir (KU), at Lok Bhavan, Srinagar.

The Lieutenant Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the University, emphasized the need to introduce contemporary, interdisciplinary and skill-oriented academic programmes aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP-2020).

He stressed that the University must focus on innovation, employability, and entrepreneurship, while ensuring that academic initiatives respond to local and regional developmental needs. The Chancellor also advised the University to strengthen integrated and professional programmes to meet emerging academic and industry requirements.

The University Council, which met under the chairmanship of the Lieutenant Governor, accorded in-principle approval to several important academic and administrative agenda items.
The Council also considered and approved the Programme Project Report (PPR) for M.A. History to be offered through the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). Approval was accorded to the extension of Merit and Merit-cum-Means Scholarship schemes to students enrolled in Five-Year Integrated Programmes.
The University of Jammu today welcomed Prof. Dinesh Singh, Vice Chairman, Jammu & Kashmir Higher Education Council (JKHEC), who, along with his team, carried out a detailed review of the University’s pioneering Design Your Degree (DYD) program. Senior faculty members, mentors, students, and senior officials associated with the program were present during the interaction.

Launched in 2023, the DYD program is the University’s flagship four-year undergraduate initiative developed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It allows students to design their own academic pathways by choosing courses across disciplines, combining classroom-based learning with hands-on experiences, and building skills relevant to emerging social and professional needs. Guided by the motto Teach to Transform, Educate to Empower, Learn to Lead, the program strives to shape confident and well-rounded graduates.

During the review, Prof. Dinesh Singh examined the progress made since the program’s inception and interacted closely with both students and mentors involved in the DYD program. He appreciated the clarity with which students articulated their learning choices and acknowledged the efforts of mentors who guide them through personalised academic planning.

“The Design Your Degree program is a bold and timely initiative. I am pleased to see students engaging with curiosity and confidence, and mentors supporting them with dedication. This model represents the future of higher education , one that values flexibility, imagination, and the individual strengths of every learner,” Prof. Singh said.

He also held discussions with faculty members on curriculum design, pedagogical innovations, and the University’s broader approach to interdisciplinary and student-centred education. The visit allowed the review team to gain first-hand insights into how the program is being implemented on the ground and the support systems built around it.

The review marks an important step in further strengthening the DYD program and aligns with the University’s resolve to create a flexible, future-ready learning environment in keeping with the vision of NEP 2020.

Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo today underscored the need for a comprehensive and futuristic roadmap to transform the higher education landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chairing a high-level meeting to review the sector, he called upon the Higher Education Department to formulate a 5–10year strategic plan aimed at elevating the stature of higher education and aligning it with contemporary academic, technological, and market needs.

The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education Department, Shantmanu; Director, Colleges; Managing Director, RUSA; and other senior officers of the department.

Emphasizing the importance of relevance and innovation, the Chief Secretary urged the Department to revise the curriculum to make it more skill-oriented, industry-driven, and aspirational in outlook.

He stressed redesigning outdated courses and introducing new, market-driven programmes to ensure students are equipped for emerging employment opportunities.

He observed that the purpose of higher education is to create a futuristic, employable generation rather than one that struggles for opportunities post-graduation. He directed the Department to seek guidance from the Union Ministry of Education, NITI Aayog, and the Higher Education Council to strengthen policy alignment and institutional excellence.

The Chief Secretary also advised the Department to make human resource management a focal area of its reform strategy, ensuring that employees remain motivated, well-supported, and adequately trained to deliver effectively under all circumstances. He maintained that building institutional capacity and nurturing a capable workforce are critical for achieving the educational excellence.

Highlighting the Department’s progress, the ACS, Higher Education, Shantmanu, informed that significant strides have been made in infrastructure development, financial management, and student enrolment across the UT. He stated that the total enrolment in higher education institutions across J&K stands at 2,87,663 students, including 9,274 students in University of Jammu, 13,375 students in University of Kashmir, 1,98,392 students (UG + PG) enrolled in Government Degree Colleges and 56,644 students in Private Colleges across J&K.

The Department also highlighted its pioneering efforts in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, making J&K one of the first UTs to adopt the 4-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) with 58 major programmes under the 3+1 Honours model. The FYUGP framework features multiple entry-exit options and the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), facilitating seamless mobility and credit transfers for students.

It was informed that the Department is prioritizing infrastructure expansion and modernization through a substantial capital expenditure plan. Out of the approved Capex budget of Rs 500 Cr, an amount of Rs 270.61 Cr has been released so far, with Rs 80.68 Cr expenditure recorded on BEAMS.

Against the target of 160 works, 30 have been completed to date. Major ongoing projects include construction/upgradation of 50 classrooms, 39 multi-purpose halls, 22 hostel blocks, 22 science blocks/labs, 19 auditoriums, and 10 administrative blocks.

Moreover it was divulged that 18 libraries are being digitized and RFID-tagged, 18 playgrounds are under development or upgradation, 9 research hubs are in progress, and 3 new library blocks are under construction.

Providing details of central schemes, the Department reported strong financial performance and steady project completion under RUSA and PM-USHA. As of October 30, 2025, out of 74 institutional/project targets across all phases (RUSA 1, RUSA 2, and PM-USHA), 38 projects have been completed, the meeting was apprised.

Additionally it was given out that against a total outlay of Rs 713.48 Cr, cumulative expenditure stands at Rs 430.40 Cr, reflecting an excellent 94% utilisation against funds released by the Central and UT Governments (Rs 455.88 Cr).

To ensure timely completion of ongoing projects by March 2026, the Department has projected an additional requirement of Rs 251.92 Cr from the Government of India.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to academic excellence and student-centric reform, the Chief Secretary directed the Department to adopt a mission-oriented approach, ensuring that higher education in J&K emerges as a model of quality, innovation, and employability in the years ahead.

A PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) program is created to equip students with essential business skills critical for career success. Through a blend of core management courses and specialized training, students develop strategic thinking, leadership, effective communication, and decision-making abilities. These programs also provide hands-on learning through case studies, internships, and projects, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world business challenges. Moreover, networking opportunities and mentorship from industry professionals enhance professional growth. Overall, a PGDM fosters a well-rounded skill set, preparing graduates to navigate complex business environments and excel in diverse roles within the corporate world.

Concept of PGDM

A Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is an advanced management program focused on developing practical business skills and strategic thinking. Unlike traditional degrees, PGDM courses are often industry-oriented, frequently updated to align with current trends, and emphasize hands-on learning. Through modules in finance, marketing, human resources, and operations, a PGDM provides a comprehensive foundation in core business areas, enabling students to tackle real-world challenges with confidence.

A PGDM course goes beyond theoretical knowledge, offering opportunities for practical application through case studies, internships, and projects. These experiences allow students to sharpen their analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills. Additionally, PGDM programs often connect students with industry experts, offering insights and mentorship that build a valuable professional network. By developing both technical expertise and soft skills, a PGDM prepares individuals to stand out in a competitive job market, positioning them for advanced roles and long-term career growth in the corporate world.

How do you build the essential skills to stand out in the business world?

Building essential skills to stand out in the business world requires a strong foundation in strategic thinking, leadership, and practical applications. A PGDM program, such as the IMI Calcutta online PGDM course, offers a well-rounded approach to developing these competencies. This course covers core business areas, including finance, marketing, operations, and human resources, enabling students to tackle real-world challenges effectively.

Through case studies and live projects, learners gain hands-on experience, applying theoretical knowledge to solve actual business issues, which sharpens their problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Additionally, group projects and collaborative work build leadership and teamwork skills, essential for thriving in today’s corporate environment. Networking opportunities with industry experts provide insights and mentorship, helping students stay updated on industry trends. With a more emphasise on practical learning and industry-relevant skills, the IMI Calcutta online PGDM course equips graduates to stand out and excel in diverse business roles.
