Five Cochlear Implant Surgeries performed at SMGS Hospital, Jammu under mentorship of AIIMS New Delhi

Under the guidance of Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean, GMC Jammu, Five Cochlear Implant Surgeries were performed at Department of ENT, Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital, Jammu on 20th and 21st December 2023.

The patients were having bilateral severe to profound hearing loss since childhood. Dr Kapil Sikka (Professor, Department of ENT, AIIMS New Delhi) and Dr Anup Singh (Associate Professor, Department of ENT, AIIMS New Delhi) led the surgical team which included Dr Parmod Kalsotra (Professor and Head) , Dr Sonika Kanotra (Professor) and Dr Kamal Kishore (Professor)

There were a total of 4 children with youngest being 17 months old and oldest being 6 years old- One underwent Bilateral cochlear implant surgery while other 3 children underwent Unilateral Cochlear implant surgery. 

The whole programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent SMGS Hospital, Jammu. The anaesthesia team was led by Dr Anju Jamwal, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesia and included Dr Renu Wakhloo, Dr Arti Mahajan and Dr Rishu Parihar. The Department of Radiodiagnosis led by Dr Vipan Magotra (Professor and Head) helped in the evaluation of patients by performing three-dimensional reconstruction of cochlea. The Department of Psychiatry led by Dr Manu Arora (Professor and Head) and Dr Shabnam Rivees (Associate Professor) helped in psychological assessment of these patients. 

The surgical team also included Vinay, Audiologist Department of ENT, who along with Manrag Jain (from Cochlear Limited) monitored the Neural Response Telemetry which showed good response in all patients after the surgical procedure.

Nursing staff included Yograj, Sheetu, Lalita Kour, Manjeet Kour, Veena, Babli Devi and Ruchi Sharma. Other Operation theatre staff included Sanjeev, Sahil, Sidharth, Shivam and Anaesthesia technician staff included Fazal and Mathew Gill.
