Jammu and Kashmir government has come up with a vital step in step in an attempt to stop the misuse of water. Jammu and Kashmir government is mulling to start working on installing water meters aimed to measure the use of water.

After the Power department took the step of installing smart meters, this is the next essential and useful step by the government.

One of the senior official informed that work on installation of water meters is likely to begin from April this year. Further official said that in phase 1, Jammu and Srinagar will have water meters installed and other districts work will begin later.

Official added that to start the project commercial establishments will be first preferred and then other sectors such as residential, industrial areas and institutional establishments will be covered and further said that improper use of water will be checked through these meters and will bring an end to that.

Official also informed that after smart water meters are installed, there will be 24×7 tap water supply to consumers. “The water shortage problem can only be resolved if people are willing to change their attitude towards water consumption,” the official said.

Meanwhile, many other states and cities in India have installed smart water meters for domestic as well as commercial water connections including Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Delhi.

The residents in these areas have opted for smart water meters linked to phones that provide updates on consumption data and the bill.
