Even as cases of Coronavirus are rising everyday in Jammu and Kashmir, Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Chander Mohan Gupta seems to be in no mood to follow the norms of social distancing.

In an event today organized at Jeevan Nagar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councilors of the MC among others were seen openly flouting the norms of social distancing by rubbing shoulders with each other.

Some of the BJP leaders were not even wearing masks while the event was going on.

It is pertinent to mention here that JMC is itself involved in preventive measures for the pandemic that has engulfed Jammu and Kashmir. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has himself highlighted the importance of social distancing during his address to nation many times during past three months.

The norms were not only flouted by Chander Mohan Gupta but also BJP councilors including Baldev Singh Billowaria of ward number 56 and Tirath Kour Raina of ward number 58 while inauguration of Green Space at Jeevan Nagar Jammu. Paramjeet Singh Pummy BJP Leader alongwith others was also present during the event.

Interestingly, Arun Gupta Executive Engineer, Anil Gupta Assistant Executive Engineer, Daleep Raina Junior Engineer and other field staff of JMC also accompanied the Mayor as per an official statement released to the media by the Mayor.

J&K government had announced penalty against those who flout the norms of social distancing among other violations.

Mayor told that this was the long pending demand of the locals which has been fulfilled by the active efforts of “concerned councilor and her team as there was no suitable Green space/park in the nearby locality for the children and old aged persons to inhale fresh air and morning and evening walk”.

Mayor further said that this work was delayed only due to nationwide lockdown and reminded that similar type of green space was inaugurated in ward number 56 Gangyal Jammu a few days back and the remaining two Green spaces which is also the part of this prestigious project under AMRUT scheme at the estimate cost of Rs 3.97 crore will also be thrown open for the general public within few days.

In view of the rising incidence of Coronavirus, the district administration of Jammu has imposed a weekend lockdown that would start from Friday evening at 6 pm and continue till Monday morning 6 am. However, the 3 days lockdown might turn ineffective if elected representatives continue to violate the restrictions and norms.
