Ranbir Canal in Jammu turns into dump yard, no efforts by JMC for cleaning

Ranbir Canal in Talab Tillo area of Jammu city has become the dumping ground for garbage and other solid waste. Unfortunately, waste is dumped around and in the Ranbir canal which passes through the city areas.

Despite the notice board has been put by Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) which strictly warns against throwing garbage and indicates ‘throwing of garbage in canal is punishable offence’ seems that JMC has completely forgotten that the canal has to be kept clean and maintained properly.

Also the canal has been clogged by polythene bags at many places. Disposal of waste, garbage and release of sewage into canal has made it a dumping site. At many sites, the embankments of Ranbir canal are jam-packed with debris. Contamination of its water has impacted the entire system and has given rise to many health problems as well.

Though various instructions have been passed that it should be kept clean and action will be taken against people caught dumping garbage but nothing has been done to keep the canal clean.

No efforts have been put by JMC and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department to take care of the canal.

Since past few years cleaning is done by private contractors of the concerned department especially in winters but since many years it is not done. Not only lackadaisical attitude of the concerned department officials can be blamed but people living in the area are also responsible for the condition of canal.
