Shehnaaz Gill of Bigg Boss 13 recently visited Kashmir. Gill in fancy-dress like attire, pumping tropes, though, was included in the viral footage.

For a video which many describe as “cringe” singer and television star Shehnaaz Gill of Bigg Boss 13 fame went viral. The singer posted a video of herself dancing to a Bollywood song in Kashmir when dressing in “traditional” Kashmiri attire in a day and age when cultural appropriation has become a highly discussed and repudiated phenomenon.

Gill captured her latest trip to Kashmir in her 45-second-long travel film. However, the video featured Gill in fancy-dress like clothing, pumping stereotypes far from being a mere travelogue video.

“When in Kashmir do it Their way! Had to dance on this iconic song at the paradise on earth … #Kashmir. In it, the tune of the Hindi Bollywood song ‘Bhumro Bhumro’ from the 2000 film ‘Mission Kashmir’ can be seen dancing in the snow.

On February 6, the video was shared on Twitter and has gone viral since then. While the actress was lauded by some for the film, many slammed her for appropriating Kashmiri culture and even misrepresenting it. A Kashmir Twitter user posted, “Quite pretty but this isn’t us . This doesn’t portray Kashmir the paradise on earth” Another was also thinking, “What in the world does this have to do with Kashmir?” A third named it “cultural appropriation 101”
