Army gets 1034 kanal land at Gulmarg, 354 kanal at Sonamarg

Jammu and Kashmir government has declared land measuring 1034 kanals and 6 marlas situated at Gulmarg and 354 kanals situated at Sonmarg as strategic areas and it will be used by the Army.

Huge piece of land of two famous tourist destinations of Gulmarg and Sonamarg have been declared as strategic areas for the use by Army.

The declaration has been made under sub-section (3) of section 3 of Jammu and Kashmir Development Act, 1970.

As per a notification of the Tourism Department issued on December 31, 2021, the government on the request of Corp Commander has declared the specified land as strategic areas for operational and training requirements of Armed Forces subject to the conditions, that the Corp Commander will ensure strict adherence to the environment related laws to prevent any environmental hazard.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir Pandurang Kondbarao Pole said that there is nothing new in this strategic area for all these lands are already under use of Army for decades, even for more than 30 to 40 years now for training and other relevant things.


“At both the places, trainings of high altitude are conducted for which the Army has already acquired land there and some is requisitioned land”, he said, adding, no new area is being added.”

He further said that for the training purpose Army may require training halls etc and this was done to enable them to have required infrastructure.
