Rules for appointment on compassionate basis in Jammu and Kashmir may soon be changed as the government is contemplating fixing a fixed percentage of such appointments in each department of the UT.

It has been learnt that Chief Secretary Dr Arun Mehta had recently held discussions with senior functionaries of J&K government in which matter of SRO-43 amendments was brought up. Cases pending under SRO-43 in GAD were also discussed.

It was decided to review the entire process of compassionate appointment by factoring in the Apex Court judgments in the norms. A committee was constituted that comprised of Principal Secretary, Home Department, Commissioner Secretary, General Administration Department and Secretary, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Department.

The committee will revisit SRO-43 and suggest amendments in the Compassionate Appointment Rules.
