Continuous snowfall in J&K brings life to a standstill; weather likely to improve from Jan 9

Inclement weather continued in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday as well and Meteorological Department had predicted that the intensity of Snowfall and rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to increase today.

Most parts of Kashmir received heavy snowfall on Saturday morning. The weather department has predicted that improvement in weather conditions will start from Sunday.

The bad weather has affected all the areas and sectors whether it is road transport or air traffic. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for vehicular movement for the third day due to bad weather.

Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole, told Excelsior that in view of the forecast of heavy snowfall, proper steps have been taken for snow clearance and provide every help to the people.

He further said that control rooms, helpline numbers have been established and men and machinery for snow clearance have been placed across Kashmir in a state of readiness.

Valley received fresh snowfall today and is likely to increase by the evening. Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and hills witnessed fresh snowfall since morning. The Meteorological Department has issued an advisory for Red alert till January 8 evening, saying that J&K would receive heavy to very heavy snowfall in the next two days following which there is possibility of gradual improvement in the weather conditions from January 9 morning.

Flights have been delayed due to low visibility because of continuous rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar airport tweeted that visibility has been reduced at the airport and snowfall is likely to continue till 11 am and added that operations shall be delayed.
