Efforts afoot to complete lighting project, night flights soon at Jammu, Srinagar Airports

A high level meeting was chaired by the Union Home Secretary, Ajay Kumar Bhalla for reviewing the execution of various schemes in Civil Aviation, Agriculture and Horticulture sectors in the two Union Territories of Jammu &Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The meeting was attented by Chief Secretary, J&K, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, Advisor to LG Ladakh, Umang Narula, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Pradip Singh and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

In the meeting discussions were held regarding the possibility of operationalizing commercial flights at night hours at the airports of Srinagar and Jammu by including suitable facilities and arrangements.
The Chief Secretary, J&K, informed the Union Home Secretary that the technical facilities and the facilities related to infrastructure which exist at Srinagar Airport to operate flights is up to 10:00 pm and during winter months visibilty gets reduced.

Thus, The Secretary, Civil Aviation informed that for improving the visibilty at night, completion of the lighting project should be done as soon as possible which will enable flights during low visibility round-the-year through concerted coordination with Indian Air Force. Further he said that the ongoing air-strip repair works at Jammu Airport will be completed this week followed by installation of lights by the month end to enable operation of night flights at Jammu Airport. Also it was informed that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is planning to establish international air connectivity through the Srinagar Airport which currently operates international flights for Hajj pilgrimage only.
