India will soon start calling bids to install a 13-kilowatt hour (GWh) grid-scale battery storage system in Ladakh. The plan, advertised as largest global tender for a 13 gigawatt-hours (GWh) grid-scale battery storage system and efforts towards installation of a large green energy capacity of 10 GW in the region.
New and renewable energy minister Raj Kumar Singh said that the electricity generated by the ministry will be supplied to other parts of the country through transmission links. Singh further said that the transmission system that has been set up in that 13000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage is added in Ladakh.
A battery capacity of 1 GWh (1,000 MWh) is sufficient to power 1million homes for an hour and around 30,000 electric cars.
As per reports, government has plans to develop Ladakh into a strategic region. The electricity generated by systems that have not yet been built will be used to supply electricity to the residents of Leh and Kargil districts as well as defense facilities.
Further Singh said, “Our strategic intent is entirely the climate, the environment. We are world leaders in climate action. We will cement our position as world leaders in climate action. It will be green energy round the clock from Ladakh.”
The storage and transmission component of the project is expected to cost ₹34,000 crore. Meanwhile, the government also plans to call bids to build a grid-scale battery storage system of 4GWh at local load dispatch center.
