J&K Congress President Ahmed Mir resigns

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Gulam Ahmed Mir has resigned from his position as head of the state unit on Wednesday. His resignation has came amid reports of internal strife in the Jammu and Kashmir Congress.

In a letter addressed Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Party, Mir stated that as a disciplined soldier, he would accept any choice she made regarding his replacement.

In the letter, he stated that in line with the traditions of the party, he has put down his papers to enable the Congress president to nominate the next chief of J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC).

J&K Congress has long struggled with factionalism with one part is being loyal to senior Congressman Ghulam Nabi Azad.  number of Azad faction leaders left their positions last year in favour of their demand for a new leadership.

Mir had led the state unit for more than seven years before being chosen as J&K Congress chief in March 2015.
