The preparations for much awaited assembly elections for Jammu and Kashmir unit have already begun as central leadership of BJP has reportedly directed to do the same. Even though Delimitation Commission has yet to provide with the preliminary report, the Union Government has directed to prepare for Assembly elections in J&K.

A senior BJP leader said that though granting of statehood to J&K is still uncertain but for conducting assembly elections and creating a democratically elected government, the Union government is ready.

A senior BJP leader said that the push for assembly elections is due to the changed scenario with the Taliban taking over in Afghanistan. He further added that election is also very important for the country’s internal security and changing security dynamics in the region.

As per reports, Delimitation Commission is likely to submit its report in December so as to start the election process.

It is pertinent to mention that during the all-party meeting held on June 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to speed up the delimitation process so as to hold assembly elections in J&K.
“Our priority is to strengthen grassroots democracy in J&K. Delimitation has to happen at a high speed so that polls can happen and J&K gets an elected Government that gives strength to J&K’s development trajectory”, the Prime Minister had stated after the all-party meeting.

Once the delimitation is completed, then only the elections will be held. The government has asked the Delimitation Commission to complete its process as soon as possible.
Delimitation Commission on June 23 held consultations with all Deputy Commissioners of J&K on restructuring the existing assembly constituencies and carving out seven new seats.
