Ladakh police to get POLNET for better communication

For providing better connectivity in the cold desert region Ladakh, the police in Leh and Kargil districts have been provided with POLNET for improved communication. POLNET is a satellite based wide area network for the modernization of Police Telecommunication and will be used by the police units for better communication.

Also, Ham Radio mediums which can talk to other operators with transmit power of about 10 Watts or less as options of communication during any emergency situation are being considered.  It helps in communication when other systems (cellular and internet etc) are down due to some failure or disaster.

As per reports, Ladakh police is facing a major challenge of disrupted communication due to mountainous terrain. Various meetings were held to discuss the problem chaired by Advisor Umang Narula, who is also Administrative Secretary of the Home Department of the Union Territory. The project has been completed and police will have the facility of POLNET for better connectivity, reported Daily Excelsior. POLNET is an amalgamation of different latest VSAT technologies.

The existing wireless network of Ladakh police will also be upgraded and even the shadow villages which don’t have communication facility at all will be integrated with the wireless network.
