National workshop on Microtomy concludes at department of Botany in Jammu University

The Six-day National Workshop on “Microtomy: Principle, Procedures and Applications held from 7-12 October 2022” concludes at Department of Botany, University of Jammu (JU), Jammu. This week-long event was conducted in offline mode only. The event was organized and supported by the Botanical Club of University of Jammu. Prof. A.K. Koul, founder member of the erstwhile Department of Biosciences and a renowned botanist of National and International repute was the Chief Guest of the valedictory function organized in the Seminar Hall of the Department of Botany, JU. 

During the valedictory function Prof. Veenu Kaul, Head of the Department formally welcomed Prof. A.K. Koul-Chief Guest, Dr. Yash Mangla expert in Microtomy from University of Delhi, Delhi, faculty members and participants. Prof. Veenu Kaul also apprised the audience about the contributions and achievements of the Chief Guest in making department of Botany and erstwhile Department of Biosciences nationally and internationally acclaimed in the subject of botany.

On the occasion, Prof. Namrata Sharma, Convener of the workshop spoke about the relevance of microtomy in plant and animal sciences. It was a long association of the Department of Botany with the University of Delhi in the subject of Microtomy which led to the organization of this National event at JU. Report of the six-day long event was read by Dr. Sikander Pal, organizing secretary of the workshop. In his report, Dr. Sikander informed the august gathering about the technical sessions and types of trainings which were imparted by Dr. Mangla to the participants. In total, ten technical sessions were conducted using state of the art machine Leica Rotary Microtome, Histocore AUTOCUT. Participants were trained in different staining and sectioning techniques by Dr. Mangla.

The workshop was attended by thirty participants including faculty members as well. The research scholars of JU, IIIM Jammu, BGSBU Rajouri, Central University of Jammu and Rayat Bhara University Mohali, Chandigarh were the participants along with faculty from GDC Ramnagar and Department of zoology JU. Dr. Mangla addressed the audience and shared his views about the event and specifically the microtomy. He applauded the organizers for conducting the workshop in a smooth and professional manner. He also thanked the participants for attending the workshop with full sincerity and dedication. His address was followed by certificate distribution ceremony, in which participants were awarded with certificates for successfully attending the workshop. Dr. Mangla was thanked by the organizing team and a token of appreciation was presented to him by the Chief guest. On the occasion, Prof. A.K. Koul, Chief Guest of the function addressed the audience and deliberated on the need of using Microtomy to unravel the structural aspects of plants and animals. He praised the expert for mentoring the participants in a diligent and excellent manner.

It was emphasized by Prof. Koul that instead of chasing and adopting the modern techniques alone, microtomy should be used to supplement the research findings. The event was attended by Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Prof. Susheel Verma, Dr. Harish Dutt and Dr. Geeta along with research scholars, participants and students. The proceedings of the valedictory function were carried by Ms. Bharti Sharma, while formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Skarma Nonzom, co-organizing secretary. Enthusiastic response was shown by the delegates to this National workshop of immense significance.
