Focusing on providing a better health care system for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, government has decided to utilize abandoned school buildings for health care centres.
Identification of such vacant schools has been initiated by the concerned authorities and nearly 500 schools have been identified, reportedly.
Health department of J&K will use these abandoned school buildings as health centres after School Education Department (SED) handed over these structures to the health department. These government primary schools witnessed minimum enrollment of students almost reduced to zero and were lying vacant since many years.
Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK) has directed all the Chief Medical Officers (CMO) across Kashmir and Jammu to formulate a team to check the viability of these buildings to be used as Health care centres.
An official of the health department said that thorough inspection of the buildings will done and after that department may shift the sub centres and primary health centres to these government school buildings.
As per details, Anantnag has got 18 such school buildings, Baramulla 68, Bandipora 3, Ganderbal 16, Kulgam 2, Kupwara 8, Pulwama 27, Shopian 32, Srinagar 42 and Budgam 26.
It is pertinent to mention that previously government tried to merge schools which had minimal enrolment and when the same was done, there were many buildings across Kashmir which was left vacant. Thus, a proposal was recommended to see if these buildings could be used by the Health Department for setting up healthcare centres to increase patient care delivery, reportedly.
